These are working definitions, not industry standards — the way this journal uses the words when we write about fixed positions, shadow boards, and the daily count. Some overlap with shop-floor jargon; a few we coined out of necessity.
- Fixed Position
- The single, unchanging spot assigned to a tool on a wall or in a drawer, regardless of who used it last.
- Shadow Board
- A mounting surface with each tool's silhouette painted or cut directly onto it, so an empty space reads at a glance.
- Painted Silhouette
- The outline of a tool traced and filled or edged onto a board, working as both a storage guide and a passive count.
- Return Discipline
- The habit, individual or shared, of putting a tool back in its fixed position immediately after use rather than at some later tidy-up.
- Closing Count
- A short tally run at the end of a shift or day to confirm every fixed position is filled before the bench is left.
- Open Outline
- A silhouette or labeled space currently missing its tool — the visual signal that prompts a search or a note in the log.
- Restock Interval
- The typical span of time between one restocking of a consumable or tool and the next, whether measured in days or in uses.
- Frequency Sort
- Arranging tools by how often they are used rather than by category, material, or alphabet.
- Tool Crib
- A designated storage area, often shared among several people, where tools are checked out and returned rather than owned individually.
- Sign-Out Sheet
- A paper or digital log recording who took a tool from a crib and when it is expected back.
- Shrinkage
- The gradual, often unnoticed loss of tools or stock over time, distinct from a single theft or breakage event.
- Drawer Blindness
- The tendency for a closed drawer to hide a shortage longer than an open wall would, simply because nothing is visible until it's opened.
- Wall Map
- A diagram, physical or digital, showing every fixed position on a pegboard or shadow board and what belongs in each.
- Hook Spacing
- The distance between mounting points on a pegboard, which determines what sizes and shapes of tool can be hung where.
- Bench Footprint
- The total working area of a bench or station, often used as a rough unit for planning storage density around it.
- Handover Slip
- A short note passed between shifts confirming the tool count at the start and end of a shift on a shared bench.
- Peg Density
- How many hooks or fixed positions are packed into a given area of pegboard — a rough measure of storage efficiency.
- Consumable Buffer
- A small reserve quantity of a wear item — blades, bits, fasteners — kept on hand to cover the gap before restocking arrives.
- Silhouette Drift
- When a painted outline no longer matches the tool it was meant for, usually after a tool is replaced with a different model.
- Visual Audit
- A quick, informal inventory check done by eye rather than by ledger, relying on shadow boards or outlines to reveal gaps.
